Phil Kelbe (Coach)
Phil coached the boys’ varsity tennis team at Whitefish Bay High School from 2001-2019. During his tenure, the Blue Dukes won the North Shore Conference titles in 2018 and 2019; Section Championship in 2002; and the Division 2 WIAA Team State Championship in 2002. Phil coached the girls’ varsity tennis team at Whitefish Bay High School from 2003 – 2010. During these eight years, the Blue Dukes won four North Shore Conference titles, three Sectional titles, and the Division 1 WIAA Team State Championship in 2005 and 2007. He was awarded the Wisconsin State Coach of the Year for girl’s tennis in 2006, by the National Education of High School Coaches Association. As a player at Wauwatosa East High School, Phil was a WIAA State High School doubles champion in 1970. From 2000-2024, Phil has served as Director of the youth and adult tennis program through the Whitefish Bay Recreation Department. He has worked as a teaching tennis pro at the Elite Sports Club in Glendale since 1998.
Tom Ebert (Athlete, Class of 1971)
Tom Ebert, MD, PhD class of 1971 was a three-sport athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track receiving a total of eight letters. In football, his highlights as a receiver in football was a game with 7 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown. He was 1st team all-conference his senior year. As a Basketball player he was coached by the incredible Jack Nagle. Tom receiving 1st team all-conference honors 2 years in a row and state honors. Tom was the top scorer and rebounder junior and senior year with a highlight game of 34 pts. and 25 rebounds. His team made it to Sectionals in both his junior and senior year. His Track and Field team coached by the motivational Earl Zamzow resulted in a state title in 1970 with Tom and teammates (including Jerry and Jim Just, Bob Berge, Jon Kearns, Todd Weir) setting state records in the 800 and 1600 meter relay events. The time in the 800-meter (880 yd) relay stood for over 25 years. His name, with teammates, is still on the WFB fieldhouse wall of indoor record holders for two relays. Tom was an officer of the WFB Letterman’s Club and raised funds for the first Universal Weight Machine for the newly opened WFB fieldhouse. Tom matriculated to Ripon College, continued to play basketball then proceeded to Medical School becoming a Professor of anesthesiology and research scientist with grants from the American Heart Association, National Institute of Health and the VA Medical center resulting in 135 publications in his specialty and invited lectureships around the world.
Dana Larsen (Athlete, Class of 2008)
Dana Larsen collected 4 letters in Tennis while attending Whitefish Bay High School. During her illustrious tennis career, she finished 2nd at WIAA State Division 1 singles as a freshman having lost to only one player all season. In her second year as a sophomore, she went undefeated at #1 singles with a record of 38-0, which included winning the WIAA State Division 1 singles title, WIAA Sectional singles title and the North Shore Conference singles title all while having a broken back. It was shortly after her sophomore season, that she was officially diagnosed with a potentially career ending back injury. Dana fought hard to return to tennis and was able to come back her junior year and win the WIAA State Division 1 doubles title with doubles partner, Emily Lawent. She is one of 3 girls in WIAA history to have won both an individual and state doubles title and the only individual to have won her singles title first. In her senior year, Dana required a second back surgery and was only allowed to play either individual or team state not both. Putting her team first, Dana elected to play at team state and helped her team capture the title. Dana was instrumental in leading Whitefish Bay High School to a Team State Championship in 2005 and 2007, and a 2nd place finish in 2006. Dana’s athletic success did not begin or end with her tenure at Whitefish Bay High School. In the Juniors at the Wisconsin, Midwest and national levels, Dana achievements include #1 ranking in the state and Midwest and #2 ranking nationally. At the collegiate level, Dana went on to play for the University of Wisconsin.
Jimmy Sherburne (Athlete, Class of 2009)
Jimmy was a two-sport athlete who earned seven varsity letters for the Blue Dukes in football and basketball. In football, Jimmy was the starting quarterback for two seasons, where in 2007, he was named 1st team all-Conference QB and guided the team to Level 1 in the WIAA playoffs. In his senior season, he was named 1st team all-conference QB and was named the North Shore Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He led the team to the playoffs again and finished his career with 3,252 passing yards and 25 touchdowns. In basketball, he was a four-year varsity player. In his freshman year, he helped lead the team to a North Shore Conference Championship and a 21-2 record. In his sophomore year, he was the team’s starting point guard. In his junior year, he was named to the North Shore Conference 2nd team and averaged 16.5 points per game. In his senior year, he led the team to a 21-2 record, a North Shore Conference championship, a #1 ranking in Division 2, was the co-North Shore Conference Player of the Year, 1st team All-Conference, AP Third Team All-State, WBCA D2 All-State, WBCA Academic All-State, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel 2nd team All-Area, NOW All Suburban, McDonald’s All-American Game Nominee. Post high school, Jimmy played collegiate basketball at Princeton University, where they went 88-37 over his four seasons, won the Ivy League Title and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2011. Jimmy played professionally in Germany in 2014-15 and was a USA Basketball 3x3 semi-finalist in 2018.
