Olympian Michael Lenard '73 Named Interim President of the Court of Arbitration of Sport
When the President of the International Court of Arbitration of Sport (ICAS), John Coates, had to step down due to his health in September 2025 after a long career with the agency, WFB HS Alumni Michael Lenard '73 was chosen to serve until 2027 as the Interim President. Lenard, a lawyer and former partner at Latham & Watkins, has been a member of ICAS since 1994, serving as Vice President since 2010. A former vice president of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, Lenard's road to the Olympics started in 1977 when he joined the US National Handball Team. He was on the US team at the 1984 Olympics. On his appointment as an interim, Lenard said, "It is a great honour for me to assume the ICAS presidency, I look forward to continuing the successful path built by these institutions." Michael Lenard attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1977 with degrees in finance and accounting. He then attended law school at Southern Cal, obtaining his JD degree. Lenard joined the US national handball team in 1977 and played through the 1984 Olympics. After the Olympics Lenard joined the international law firm of Latham & Watkins, specializing in private investment funds, international and domestic joint ventures, and entertainment transactions. In 1993 he joined the Paladin Group, a realty income properties group, where he eventually became executive vice-president and counselor. He has also been with William E. Simon & Sons, a private investment firm that sponsors institutional investment funds and makes investments in private equity, real estate and special situations. He has served on the US Olympic Committee Athletes’ Advisory Council, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and was on the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG).
